Moving to Boise
Why People Are Relocating to Boise
Boise and the broader Treasure Valley has become one of the most talked-about relocation destinations in the United States — offering an extraordinary combination of outdoor recreation access, a clean and safe urban environment, a rapidly growing technology economy, and relatively affordable housing compared to coastal markets. In-migration from California, the Pacific Northwest, and coastal cities has been dramatic.
Economy and Employment. Boise's economy has diversified significantly. Micron Technology (a global semiconductor leader) is headquartered in Boise. Hewlett Packard originally grew from Boise roots. Amazon, PaySimple, and a growing roster of technology companies have established operations. Healthcare (St. Luke's, St. Alphonsus), state government, and agriculture complete a diversified economic base.
Outdoor Lifestyle. Boise's outdoor access is exceptional for a city its size. The Boise River Greenbelt (25 miles of paved paths along the river) runs through the city. Bogus Basin Ski Resort is 16 miles from downtown. The Owyhee Mountains, Sawtooth Range, Cascade and Payette Lakes, and Snake River offer hiking, fishing, camping, rafting, and hunting at a world-class level.
Housing Market. Boise experienced extraordinary appreciation from 2019–2022, driven by California in-migration and constrained supply. The market has moderated from those peaks but remains significantly higher than pre-COVID levels. Options range from urban condos and historic homes in the North End to suburban master-planned communities in Meridian, Eagle, Star, and Nampa.
Lifestyle. Boise has a clean, safe, and community-oriented atmosphere. The downtown is walkable and vibrant. The food scene has grown dramatically. The city balances a relaxed Western lifestyle with growing urban sophistication.
What Buyers Should Know. Idaho has a state income tax. Summer smoke from western wildfires can significantly affect air quality for weeks at a time — this is a real lifestyle factor to understand. Boise's rapid growth has affected infrastructure, and commute planning is increasingly important. Nampa and Caldwell offer more affordability but longer commutes.
